Your questions answered

Private VS Agency care, what is the difference?

Private care

• Care is often more personal and consistent

• Greater flexibility in hours and support

• Direct communication with the care provider

• Often better continuity and relationship-building

• Can be more cost-effective for families

Agency care

• Carers are employed by a larger organisation

• Higher overheads can mean higher hourly rates

• Less flexibility in scheduling

• Carers may change frequently

How much on average does care cost?

The cost of care in the UK varies depending on the type of care, location, and level of support required.

As a general guide (2025 averages):

Hourly in-home care: £25–£35 per hour Buckinghamshire/Hertfordshire average: £30.01 per hour

Overnight care: £120–£180 per night

Live-in care: £900–£1,500 per week

Residential care homes: £800–£1,200 per week

Nursing homes: £1,000–£1,600+ per week

Many people also qualify for local authority funding, attendance allowance, or NHS support, depending on their

circumstances.

Do I need full time care straight away?

A good care provider will help you explore the most appropriate and affordable option, rather than encouraging more care than is necessary. Care can be introduced gradually, for example: A few hours a week for companionship or practical help, short visits for personal care or meal support, or temporary care following

illness, hospital discharge, or bereavement. Starting with low-level support often helps people remain independent for longer

and allows care to adapt as needs change.

How do I introduce carers to my stubborn family members?

This situation is extremely common and completely understandable. Many people feel anxious about accepting help, particularly when it feels like a loss of independence. One helpful approach is to frame care as supportive assistance rather than “care” itself — for example, describing it as a bit of help around the house. Introducing carers gradually can also make a significant difference, perhaps beginning with companionship or help with small errands rather than personal care. It’s important that your family member is able to retain choice and control throughout this process, so they feel involved rather than managed. Where possible, having the same familiar face helps build comfort and trust over time, allowing relationships to develop naturally and at the person’s own pace. Experienced carers are trained to work gently, respectfully, and without pressure, and once trust is established, even the most reluctant individuals often come to appreciate the reassurance, consistency, and dignity that good care brings.

 What does ‘Chauffeuring’ include?

Chauffeuring covers any support that involves travel by car. This may include getting to and from appointments, collecting prescriptions, or going shopping, particularly where public transport may be difficult or tiring.

It can also include visits to friends or family, trips to the airport, or simply going out for the day. All journeys are planned in advance so everything feels calm and well organised.

What if help is needed with something that isn’t  listed in the prices?

Some additional support may be offered at no extra cost. This can include help with everyday technology, such as setting up a phone, printer, video calls, email, or social media, as well as assistance with calling abroad.

If you’re unsure whether something is included, it can always be discussed.

 What does administering medication involve?

Support with medication includes prompting, safely administering prescribed dosette box medication, and applying prescription creams or emollients.

Medication is only administered with written consent from a family representative, ensuring everything is handled safely and responsibly.

What if the person receiving care is outside the  current service area?

Charisma Care continues to grow, and it’s hoped that more areas can be supported in the future. If someone is currently outside the catchment area, a scheduled calling service may still be available. This provides reassurance, companionship, and helpful guidance.

Times can be arranged through the contact form which can be found below under 'speak to one of our team'.

What if care is needed outside the service area for  a short visit?

Special arrangements can be made for one-off visits to relatives or friends outside the usual area. The same level of care is provided, just in a different location.

A clear, one-off mileage fee of £10 applies in these situations.

Does availability change from week to week?

Once a care plan is in place and all paperwork is completed, there is a guaranteed weekly place in the schedule. While exact visit times may vary slightly, the agreed hours remain consistent.

Availability for the following week is always discussed in advance.

What happens if there are concerns about care?

Any changes in wellbeing or behaviour are taken seriously. As part of safeguarding procedures, concerns are carefully recorded and followed up.

Where appropriate, trusted professionals such as social workers, private GPs, or counsellors may be involved. Families are kept informed, and concerns are formally acknowledged so the best possible outcome can be agreed together.
